Coronavirus Letter To Our Members

Date:     March 19, 2020

To:          All PPEO Members and Placer County Employees

Our mission as your union board is to serve you the best way we can.  Often, that’s with labor related issues and negotiations or exciting engagement opportunities.  But most recently with this COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, we wanted to share some resources with you.  Also, with the everchanging environment we live and work in currently, we want to assure you we are working closely with our Local 39 Representatives and County leaders to take care of our PPEO members and employees of Placer County.  Additionally, if you need direct assistance from Local 39, you can call 530-823-7736 and ask for James Britton or Gary Winegar.

In these unprecedented times, we saw an email from the County CEO’s office explaining the temporary closure of non-essential citizen-facing services.  While the email outlined this guideline was through March 29th (or extended if necessary), we believe the continuation of pay and benefits shows the efforts to support those impacted by this decision.  Additionally, the County has created a phone line for updates on this issue at 530-584-1500.

We also know there are so many resources about being safe, helping prevent the spread, and other related information from the Federal level on down to the local level.  We wanted to share a few of these resources with you in hopes to provide opportunities to our members to keep themselves safe.  We also know, those who are still working through this time, may want to know their rights and responsibilities.  Please review the following websites for more information:

POSTPONED: Annual Spring Bowling Event

To:  All PPEO Members and Placer County Employees,

We are sad to announce our decision to postpone the Annual Spring Bowling Event planned for April 4th.  While we know many of you enjoy attending this event, we want to respect the concerns and advice of the County Public Health Officer and now the Governor of California.

The advice to assist in reducing the rapid spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is to postpone large gatherings.  The following is from our own county Public Health:

Large Gatherings:

Those who are planning large gatherings should consider modifying, postponing or cancelling them, especially if large numbers of people will be within arm’s length of each other. Follow CDPH guidance under Scenario II, including:

  •  Consider canceling non-essential events primarily for or attended by older adults and people with chronic medical conditions at higher risk for severe illness.
  • Discuss event details with local health officials and prepare to implement an emergency contingency plan.
  • If events go on, instruct participants and event staff not to participate if ill, and recommend that vulnerable populations not attend.

We want to assure everyone; this is only a postponement and not a cancellation.  We look forward to hosting this event in the future.

Employee Engagement

PPEO would like to help support Employee Engagement events throughout the county.  If your department is holding an employee-centered event that fosters team building and has a positive impact on the employees attending, we'd like to help!  Please download the Employee Engagement Request For Funds form using the link below and email the completed form to You can also inter-office the form to any board member.

Longevity Has Been Resolved

Placer County and PPEO have come to an agreement on the Longevity language in the current MOU.  A side letter to the MOU was approved by CallPERS on October 31, 2019.  The side letter outlines three tiers for longevity pay for current permanent employees.

Longevity Pay A: Applies to permanent employees who were already receiving longevity pay on or before October 31, 2019.  These employees will continue to receive the 5% increase in pay.

Longevity Pay B: Applies to permanent employees hired on or before October 31, 2019 who have not yet qualified for longevity.  These employees will receive a 2% increase upon completion of 10 years of continuous service and an additional 3% upon completion of 15 years of continuous service.

Employees hired after October 31, 2019 are not eligible for longevity pay.

Legal Defense Fund

PPEO realizes some public safety staff may want to purchase/participate in Legal Defense Fund protections as an assurance, should the need arise. This year, the PPEO Board heard a compelling presentation from the Fraternal Order of Police Northern California Lodge 019 and would like to provide their contact information for public safety staff who would like to participate in a Legal Defense Fund. For more information on this organization, and to enroll in this benefit, please see the contact information below or visit the website at:

We exist for you!

The Placer Public Employee's Organization is your union. Our members are why we are here. Placer County employees are not automatically enrolled in PPEO and must choose to become members.
